Sedation Dentistry

For many patients, anxiety or fear about dental procedures can make it difficult to maintain good oral health or seek needed treatment. Sedation dentistry offers a safe and effective solution that allows you to receive the dental care you need while remaining calm and comfortable. Legacy Family Dental's doctors are experienced in administering various levels of sedation to help anxious or fearful patients relax during their appointments. Whether you have mild dental anxiety or need to undergo a complex procedure, our team will work with you to determine the right sedation option for your specific needs and comfort level.

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you relax during dental treatment. The level of sedation can range from minimal to deep, depending on the extent of your anxiety and the complexity of the procedure being performed. Minimal sedation allows you to remain awake and responsive, while still feeling relaxed and at ease. Moderate sedation may make you drowsy and you may not remember much of the procedure. With deeper levels of sedation or general anesthesia, you will sleep through the entire appointment. Your dentist will monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure to ensure your safety and comfort at all times. Local anesthesia is typically still used to numb the treatment area, so you will not feel pain—only the sensation of pressure.

Sedation dentistry may be recommended for patients who experience:

  • Severe dental anxiety or fear of dental procedures
  • Difficulty sitting still for extended periods of time
  • A low pain tolerance or heightened gag reflex
  • Complex or extensive dental work requiring longer appointment times
  • Negative experiences or trauma related to past dental visits
  • Special needs or medical conditions that make traditional dentistry challenging
  • The need for multiple procedures that can be completed in a single appointment
  • Specific phobias related to dental sounds, smells, or sensations

During your sedation dentistry appointment, your dentist will first discuss your health history and any medications you are currently taking to ensure sedation is safe for you. An IV line may be placed to administer the sedative medication directly into your bloodstream, allowing for precise control of your comfort level throughout the procedure. You will be given clear instructions on how to prepare for your appointment, including fasting requirements and arranging for a trusted friend or family member to drive you home afterward. Throughout your treatment, your vital signs—including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels—will be continuously monitored by trained staff to ensure your safety.

Following your sedation dentistry appointment, you may feel drowsy or groggy for the remainder of the day. It is important to have someone drive you home, as sedation can affect your ability to operate a vehicle safely. You should plan to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid making important decisions or operating machinery. Some patients experience mild side effects such as nausea or dizziness, but these typically resolve quickly. Your dentist will provide detailed aftercare instructions specific to your procedure and the type of sedation used. You should be able to return to normal activities the following day, though you may want to stick to soft foods if you had extensive dental work performed.

No matter your level of dental anxiety, our goal is to provide you with a comfortable, stress-free dental experience so you can achieve and maintain excellent oral health.
